Powerpoint

I am putting together the PowerPoint tonight and tomorrow. Thanks for making the info quick to find. If you have anything in particular you want to see on the PowerPoint, let me know. I will send you all drafts as I complete parts of it, and I welcome your feedback.

Misconceptions for power point

This is a list of ten myths about lightning.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/hnx/LightningMyths-1.pdf

In this website a myth about lightning is listed and you click on it to get a full description of what the truth actually is.

This is a power point I found online that has common misconceptions about lightning and interesting facts.

This is a video about the misconception that tires protect you from lightning while in a car.  This video shows what really keeps you safe riding in a car during a storm.

Exhibits for the power point

Here are exhibits of lightning.

The first are activities to create lightning.  Most of the activities I found were repetitive so these are the basics.

This is an activity using lifesavers to literally create lightning in your mouth.

This document has two activities, one to create lightning, the other thunder.

This activity uses different materials to create sparks by static electricity showing students what creates lightning.

Here are websites that have great pictures of lightning.

The first one is on the National Geographics website.

Here are 15 powerful images of lightning.

23 more images of lightning.

Lesson plans for the power point

Here are my lesson plans with brief description for the power point.

This lesson talks about how static electrity cause lightning. Students perform 4 different activities that show how lightning is created.

This websites has tons of lesson plans pertaining to thunder and lightning including how to create both, what causes them, and lightning safety.

This lesson is for grades 3-5. It shows students how electric charges contribute to the formation of lightning.  It also has students investigate the frequency of lightning strikes across the United States

This site has really good key terms and concepts

http://www.instructorscorner.org/media/resources/schools/Masters/EDU_Lightning/3-5%20How%20and%20Where%20Does%20ligh.pdf

These were really the only few websites I could find with lessons about lightning.  I know it is not many, but the lots of lessons link literally has lots of lessons within it.  I could show several of them to the class during the presentation.

Simplified form for our activity

Hey ya'll here is a simplified version of our activity.

This is a site I found on Pinterest. Easy idea, not a lot of materials involved.

Lesson Plans about Lightning

Here are some lesson plans about lightning.  These would be great to teach on their own, or to involve in a STEM lesson.  The project listed in this blog would be great to go alongside any of these lesson plans.

Lightning Under water video

This video is a Harmony STEM project where a student creates lightning in water in a test tube.  This would be a great project to do with students of all ages to demonstrate how lightning works.

National Geographic and Lightning

This first website is a great way to open up a lesson about lightning.  The section about lightning gives a lot of in depth information, and offers a photo gallery with amazing pictures.  The National Geographic website has information about many different aspects of weather.

The next website I would like to share contains information about lightning and offers links to other resources about weather and electricity.  It also offers a couple of activities called "Learn by Doing" on how to make thunder and lightning.

What is Lighning?

Below is a link for the Weather Whiz Kids website.  It provides interesting information about lightning in a way that is easy for kids to understand.  This website also has several useful resources such as experiments, games, flashcards, and many more!
